Today is Fagu Purnima
Today is Fagu Purnima (Holi), the vibrant festival of colors celebrated in the Hindu Sanatan tradition with great joy, harmony, and enthusiasm. With the arrival of spring, nature brings new blossoms, fresh fragrances, and renewed hope. This season is embraced as a celebration of colors. Fagu Purnima is not just a day to play with colors; it is a sacred occasion to share warmth and affection, to forget past bitterness, and to revive relationships with renewed spirit.
According to religious belief, this festival is associated with the story of Prahlad, Holika, and Hiranyakashyap. Prahlad, a symbol of truth and devotion, was protected by divine grace when Holika, who attempted to harm him, was herself consumed by fire. This legend signifies the victory of truth and faith over falsehood and arrogance. Therefore, Fagu Purnima is not merely a festival—it represents the triumph of righteousness, devotion, and moral values.
In Nepal, Fagu Purnima is celebrated with particular grandeur in the Kathmandu Valley. The tradition begins with the erection of the ceremonial “Chir” in historic palace squares, followed by joyous celebrations with colors, vermilion powder, and water on the full moon day. In the Terai region, the festival is often celebrated the following day with equal vibrancy. Although the styles of celebration may differ across the Himalayas, hills, and plains, the spirit remains the same- unity and goodwill.
Each color holds its own symbolic meaning: red represents love and energy, yellow symbolizes happiness and brightness, green reflects hope and prosperity, and blue signifies depth and peace. When we apply colors to one another, it is not merely external decoration- we are adding trust to relationships, sweetness to friendships, and positivity to life.
On this day, families, friends, and loved ones gather to exchange greetings, share delicious delicacies, and spread laughter. It inspires us to wash away misunderstandings and begin anew with open hearts.
May this Fagu Purnima fill your life with vibrant happiness, strong relationships, progress, and peace.
May your life be as colorful as the festival itself,
And may your bonds remain as deep and lasting as love.
Warm wishes on Fagu Purnima!
