This auspicious day is also observed as Vyasa Purnima, commemorating the birth anniversary of the great sage Maharshi Vedavyasa. Revered as the Adi Guru (the first Guru), he is remembered for compiling and preserving the Vedas and for authoring timeless scriptures such as the Mahabharata and the Puranas, thereby bestowing an invaluable treasure of knowledge upon humanity.
In Sanatan philosophy, a Guru is not merely a teacher who imparts education but a spiritual guide who dispels the darkness of ignorance and leads one toward the light of wisdom. As the sacred scripture proclaims:
Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshwarah;
Guru Sakshat Parabrahma, Tasmai Shri Gurave Namah.
"The Guru is Brahma (the Creator), the Guru is Vishnu (the Preserver), the Guru is Maheshwara (the Destroyer). The Guru is indeed the Supreme Absolute Reality. Salutations to that revered Guru."
This revered verse expresses the belief that the Guru embodies the divine principles of creation, preservation, dissolution, and the Supreme Truth. The presence of a true Guru offers far more than academic knowledge- it provides direction, wisdom, discipline, values, self-awareness, and spiritual awakening.
Guru Purnima is traditionally observed by paying homage to one's Guru, parents, teachers, spiritual mentors, and all those who have positively influenced our lives. Seeking their blessings, offering prayers, performing acts of charity, studying sacred scriptures, and engaging in self-reflection are considered especially auspicious and spiritually rewarding on this day.
In today's world, although knowledge is more accessible than ever, the need for a true Guru remains as important as it has always been. Technology can provide information, but only a Guru can inspire the values of righteousness, compassion, patience, morality, and self-realization. Guru Purnima therefore serves as a timeless reminder to honor, respect, and express heartfelt gratitude to every Guru who has illuminated our path and shaped our lives.
