Putrada Ekadashi is one of the most significant fasting observances in the Hindu Sanatan tradition. This sacred fast is especially observed for the attainment of progeny, the long life of children, good character, and the welfare of the family lineage. Observed during the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the month of Paush, this Ekadashi is known as Putrada Ekadashi, which literally means “the Ekadashi that grants a son.”
According to religious scriptures, worshiping Lord Vishnu with faith and devotion while observing this fast helps remove obstacles related to childbirth and brings happiness through children. On this day, devotees take an early morning bath, wear clean clothes, and worship Lord Vishnu or Shaligram. The worship of the sacred Tulsi plant, lighting lamps (Deepdaan), recitation of the Vishnu Sahasranama, and chanting the holy name of Lord Hari are considered especially meritorious.
Putrada Ekadashi is not only observed for the desire to have children but also serves as an inspiration to raise children with good values, righteousness, and moral discipline. It is believed that this fast brings happiness, peace, and prosperity to the family.
Thus, by observing the Putrada Ekadashi fast with devotion, self-discipline, and sincerity, devotees receive the blessings of Lord Vishnu and attain virtue, peace, and joy through children, as affirmed by scriptural beliefs.
