Nepal’s great festival, Tihar, is celebrated for five days, and the fifth and most emotional day is known as Bhai Tika.
On this day, sisters apply Tika (auspicious marks) on their brothers’ foreheads, offer garlands, sweets, and heartfelt blessings for their long life, success, and prosperity.
Thus, this festival strengthens the bond of love and affection between sisters and brothers.
The Mythological Story behind Bhai Tika
According to legend, the God of Death, Yamaraj, and his sister Yamuna met on this very day.
Yamuna invited her brother Yamaraj, performed a special puja (ritual worship), and applied five-colored Tika on his forehead.
She offered him garlands and sweets, wishing for his long life and happiness.
Pleased by her love and devotion, Yamaraj asked her to make a wish.
Yamuna wished that on this day, all brothers receiving Tika and garlands from their sisters would be blessed with long life and prosperity.
From that day onward, the tradition of Bhai Tika began.
Exchange of Tika, Gifts, and Blessings
Brothers also apply Tika to their sisters and exchange gifts and blessings.
Through Bhai Tika, sisters pray for their brothers’ longevity and well-being, while brothers, in return, express their gratitude and love by offering clothes, money, sweets, and tokens of respect.
This exchange is not merely material, but a symbol of love, remembrance, and gratitude.
